LOTHROP: Rooted in History, 1632 "Griffin"

Although John Lothrop was not in the first original fleet, Reverend Lothrop was mentioned in John Winthrop's, the first Governor of Massachusetts Colony, journal. 

"...the Griffin and another ship now arriving with about two hundred passengers and one hundred cattle, (Mr. Lothrop and Mr. Simmes, two godley ministers, coming in the same ship,)...."

John Lothrop

John Lothrop was born circa 1584 and was Christened on 20 Dec 1584 in Elton, East Riding, Yorkshire, England. 

He was an educated man with a B.A from Oxford circa 1605 and an M.A. from Queen's College, Cambridge, England circa 1609.

John married 16 Oct 1610 to Hannah House, who died while he was in prison for preaching against the Church of England (a reformed version of the Catholic Church established for the benefit the divorce of King Henry the VIII). Hannah bore John eight children. John married, again, in the Colonies to Anne (1616-1687) on 27 Sep 1634, but my ancestry began from first marriage to Hannah Howse. 

Hannah Howse was born circa 1584 to Reverend John Howse and his wife Anne (surname lost to history). Her parents did not make the journey to the Colonies. 

John, along with his children and members of his congregation were forced to flee England for the Colonies on the vessel Griffin. On 18 Sep 1634 the ship arrived in Massachusetts Bay as recorded by John Winthrop in his journal,(excerpt above).

John remained a Minister and was founding member of Scituate church in 1634/5. On 7 Jun 1637 he became a freeman. John and his family removed to Barnstable in 1639 with other members of his congregation including several of my other immigrant ancestors. 

John Lothrop will was dated 10 Aug 1653 and probated on 7 Mar 1653/4 (Julian calendar), so he died sometime between those dates.

Winthrop Fleet

Massachusetts Bay Company was joint stock trading company chartered by the English Crown in 1629 to establish a colony in New England. John Winthrop and his fleet of eleven ships brought over 700, mostly puritan, passengers from England to settle in Boston, Salem, and other cities around Massachusetts Bay. The ships were Arbella, Ambrose, Talbot, Jewl, Charlse, Mayflower (not 1620 vessel), Hopewell, William and Francis, Whale, Success, and Trial. This wave of colonization was known as first The Great Migration.

Thomas French Sr

Thomas William French Sr and wife Susan Riddlesdale are my immigrant ancestors. They are believed to have arrived in Massachusetts Bay Colony on 13 Jun 1630 landing at Salem, Essex, British Colonial America.

Thomas William French Sr was born 11 Oct 1584 in Bury, Addington, Suffolk, England. The translated motto on the French crest means I would rather die than be disgraced. Thomas French Sr died before the probate of his will on 5th Nov 1639 in Ipswich, Essex, MA Bay, British Colonial America. 

Thomas and Susan Riddlesdale are believed to have been married 5 Sep 1608 in Assington, Suffolk, England. Susan was born circa 1584 and Christened on 20 Apr 1584 in Boxford, Assington, Suffolk, England. She died 28 Sep 1658 in Ipswich, Essex, MA Bay, British Colonial America.

Thomas French Jr

Thomas French Jr came to America with his parents and siblings with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630; however, the Great Migration Begins has his arrival in 1632. Thomas was born 27 Nov 1608 in Assington, Suffolk, England and died 8 Aug 1680 in Ipswich, Essex, MA. 

Thomas was believed to be a tailor. His first residence was in Boston. He joined Boston church in 1632, later he moved to Ipswich. He became a freeman on 6 Nov 1632, and he was able to sign his will along with other Ipswich historical documents. Thomas served in the militia during Pequot war, (1636-1638).

On 21 Jun 1637, John along with others in the town of Ipswich signed a petition in against John Winthrop Jr's removal from their town. John French's signature is the last in the left row. Anthony Colby, also, signed this document on the right side column.

Mary (surname possibly Scudamore) was believed to be born circa 1598 in Tedgewood, Upton Bishop, Herefordshire, England. It is unknown when she immigrated. Mary died 6 May 1681 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.

Samuel (1639-1688).  There is an account where "Ensign Thomas French and Thomas French Jr were sureties on the bond of Samuel French when young Samuel was charged with a misdemeanor with Lydia Brown, at court 26 Mar 1667 [EQC 3:398]."

Anthony Colby

Anthony Colby was born circa 1605 and Christened on 8 Sep 1605 in Horbling, Lincolnshire, England to Thomas Colby (1567-1625) and Anne Jackson (1574-1625). 

Anthony married circa 1633 to widow Susanna, (her surname believed to be Haddon). Susanna was born circa 1610 in England. Susanna married a third time to William Whitridge in 1663, three years after Anthony's death. William Whitridge, who died in 1669. Susanna died destitute in/around 8 Jul 1689. 

Anthony came to Massachusetts Bay Colony as part of the Winthrop in 1630. He first settled in Boston, then moved to Cambridge 1632, Ipswich 1637, Salisbury 1640, and in 1654 Anthony became a founding father of town of Amesbury, Massachusetts where his home still stands today. 

It was recorded that Anthony joined the Boston church, most likely Puritan because Quakers and Catholics were persecuted and banished from the Colony--even helping Quakers was cause for fine or punishment. This happened to Thomas Macy. Anthony Colby purchased Macy's house in Amesbury circa 1654.

Anthony was most likely educated because he could sign his name on various Colonial documents. He owned a sawmill and became a freeman 14 May 1634. Anthony served on several grand juries.

The 1654 Macy-Colby House still remains in possession of the Colby family as a museum, supported by an endowment after a descendant named Moses Colby struck gold during California gold rush.
