BAGLEY: Rooted in History, Salem Witch Trails

10th Great Grandparents
Mack-Smith Branch

Orlando Bagley

Orlando Bagley is believed to have born circa 1623 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, and immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony around 1642.

Orlando Bagley, along with father-in-law Anthony Colby, was one of the founders of Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1654. He married Sarah A Colby the year before on 6 Mar 1653 in Salisbury, MA.

Records put Orlando and Sarah Colby in Boston for the births of all of their children. Their youngest, Sarah A Bagley, was born 3 Mar 1663, three months before the death of her mother. It is documented that Orlando died the same year, also, in Boston.

It is believed that Orlando died shortly after Sarah. It is possible that the children returned to Amesbury to live with their grandmother, Susannah Colby. This is purely speculation, but there is record of an Orlando Bagley as Constable in Amesbury in 1692, he may have grown up there.

Many believe that Orlando Sr was a Constable in Amesbury during the time that Susannah Martin was taken to Salem to be tried for witchcraft. This is incorrect because he died in 1663. According to other documentation, It is Orlando Bagley II who was Constable at this time.

This correlates with the testimony of Constable Orlando Bagley in 1692 as directly transcribed below:
